Bespoke bicycle leather handle grip
- Sample Detail -
Leather - Achab cognac (vegetable tanned, Italy)
With moulton SST
.
기획,
Our own leather grip for bike,
This is the first product that I had in mind as a task that must be solved while designing the bike product lineup.
Rather than the task of the manufacturing method itself, it was important to select high-quality subsidiary materials and find a reliable partner to receive them stably.
Rather, to solve a task that is more difficult than design or production, we worked to melt our tones based on the subsidiary materials selected through a year of searching and purchasing dozens of samples.
The bicycle grip is expected to serve as a connecting passage that leads various bicycle-related accessories in a unified direction.
.
Design,
Sample - Achab cognac
'What are the details of handcrafted leather that can be expressed in the handle?'
Since the leather part of the bicycle grip, which is a relatively simple structure, has a simple structure, we paid attention to the combination of several details that can be made with leather handicraft technology that can differentiate it from existing products.
There are several methods of creasing, in which a decorative line is drawn by heating before finishing the cross-section of the leather.
It is divided into F-type, FN-type and B-type.
It is a division of professional areas, but simply
The F type draws lines at intervals.
The FN type is to press the corners roundly while drawing a line.
Type B means to draw a thick border of a certain width.
The one we use for general work is the FN type.
And the B type newly applied to this grip product has a very unique and strong image by creating a thick border line through the contrast expression at the tip.
* There is a difference in the degree of expression depending on the leather.
To be precise, you can think of it as a form that applies both FN type and B type at the same time.
The B type requires more effort and time than the FN type.
But the handle grip we make is at least different from the existing common grips, and because it is painstakingly handcrafted, I wanted it to be a more beautiful product with quality and sophistication that it can boast of.
.
Hand sewing,
The closure of the handle grip with a cylindrical structure is manufactured using the X-shaped hand-sewn technique. It is labor intensive, but it is sturdy and has a beautiful shape.
A unique method of creasing and neat hand-sewn stitching combine to fill in the hand-made elements and details enough for the leather handle grip, which can be boring.
.
Leather tag,
Both end caps are filled with leather tags engraved with Arte di mano's logo.
In the basic configuration, one side is a text logo, and the other side is laser engraved with Arte di mano's 'A' initials logo.
.
.
Expandability of initials engraving,
A very familiar thing to us who have been doing custom work for a long time.
But with a bike, this is also very new.
When applying for an optional personal initial, the 'A' initial logo is excluded and the desired text is engraved in its place.
Lost contact information, meaningful names or phrases, simple text messages, etc.
It is an initialing system that is rarely applied in the bicycle-related category, and you can express yourself or send a message for your family or loved ones.
Or, you can put a special meaning in a sensible gift you can give to those around you who are addicted to bicycles.
Of course, if you ever dispose of the bike together with the grip, you can return this special grip with the normal Arte di mano default setting by purchasing the leather part separately later.
.
Bespoke,
In grip accessories that allow you to choose more leather, you can choose from more than 100 options from crocodile located at the top to high-quality cowhide, combining stitch colors other than basic matching, and engraving your own words, only for one person. You can own the one and only grip in the world.
That is the beginning of the familiar but unfamiliar experience made possible by the creation of Arte di mano's bicycle accessories.
.
Mountable range,
It is a design that can be mounted on a handlebar with a diameter of 22mm, which is the universal thickness of a general handlebar, and requires approximately 127mm of space based on the straight length.
The structure of the grip is basically a plastic pipe in the middle with leather wrapped around it and metal decorations on both sides for fixing. The metal trim on both sides holds the handlebar and plastic pipe from both sides and holds the handle in place.
The metal finishing the end part (the metal on the right in the photo) is wider than the protruding part of the plastic pipe to be connected. If both plastic parts (127mm) in the photo can be located on the handlebar, it can be installed.
Due to the nature of the custom-made method, we only make products that respond to the customer's order.
Before ordering, be sure to check whether it can be installed or not.
.
Exception - Old Brompton M-Bar,
(Installation method when the handle bar is short than 127mm)
Basically, most straight bar bikes have a handle size of 120-130mm that is almost universal, so it can be installed on most bikes.
However, there are some exceptions that use a short handle of 90mm, and the representative model is the older Brompton M-bar model.
The current 120mm handle is applicable, but the old M-bar handle is shorter in length.
There are a total of 6 Bromptons in the JnK studio, one is an S bar and the other 5 are all old M-bar Bromptons.
(In the case of the old S bar, since it is a straight bar, it can be installed without any problems only by moving the brake and gear.)
For that reason, we have come up with a possible alternative to mounting the handle grip on a short handlebar.
That's the installation via spacers cut out of an optional 22mm aluminum pipe.
Basically, if the length is insufficient, the plastic inner pipe will be empty, so the wider metal fitting at the end will not be secured even when the bolts are tightened.
The spacer with the same outer diameter as the handlebar fills the empty space inside the plastic pipe to help fix the metal decoration at the end.
Measure the difference in length of the handlebars based on the length to the end of the plastic
If you order it to protrude about 0-5mm (not to be short), fixing and mounting of the end metal is basically possible.
The length of the left and right may be different depending on the type of brake and gear leather installation, so be sure to check before ordering.
.
- Precautions when using spacers -
However, since the connection through the spacer does not connect the spacer with the existing handlebar, you must pay attention to the following points.
1. If the length of the handlebar is insufficient, it is impossible to mount the grip without a spacer.
2. Since it is a device that is fixed to the bicycle and handlebar only with the narrow inner metal among the two metals, the inner fixing device must be sufficiently firmly fixed.
3. When using for the first time, the screws may come loose during use, so it is recommended to tighten them once or twice after riding after the first installation. (This is the case with most threaded fittings. They usually no longer loosen after they are seated.)
4. The fastening metal on the extended end side does not affect the fixation with the handlebar. However, the end metal does not come out of the grip and is fixed.
If you pay attention to these precautions, stable use is possible.
All five old M-bars in the workshop have been safely used since the first prototype.
Mounting using spacers has also been tested for more than 500 km, and it is possible to drive stably without discomfort enough for everyday use as well as for light dancing.
However, in extreme dancing driving, you may feel a slight sway due to the separated pipe.
* All cautions are not applicable to general handlebars that normally have a space of 127mm or more. There are no precautions in a normal installation.

Be sure to order 2 pieces after checking the length of both sides.

Finish - Matt type, Oil and waxy / Thickness - 2.0 ~ 2.2 mm / Softness - ★★★★☆
Novonappa leather is a hybrid type of leather with a vegetable finish on the surface of chrome-tanned leather.
Because it is chrome tanned, it is lighter than vegetable leather products, but the texture of the surface is like vegetable tanned leather, and the surface of the leather naturally ages according to use. In addition, the texture of the surface is very soft and moist due to the sufficiently absorbed wax and oil content. This is another kind of texture that can be found in the hybrid type, which is different from the vegetable type. Like Bridle, when not used often, the wax component inside the leather cuts off the surface to form a white powdery film, and when used again, the wax component melts again and penetrates to restore the original surface texture.
This is the original leather of HAAS, France, which is a supplier of Hermes, and is used by the French luxury brand to create vegetable-looking tan or black products.

Bridle leather is a premium leather that has the maximum fastness and sturdy tension that can be produced with cowhide enough to be used in the manufacture of horse harnesses such as reins and saddles.-Tallow and oil through vegetable tanned cowhide for more than 6 weeks. It is completed through a manual process of penetrating-finishing. In particular, the bridle leather used in Arte di mano is the original English bridle leather, the leather produced by SEDGWICK in the UK, which has a tradition of more than 100 years. It is the best among bridle leather that is used for bags used in the British royal family. When not in use or at low temperatures, a white powdery tallow is formed and occupies the surface, but with use, its characteristic smooth and luxurious gloss is gradually revealed.
It is cowhide made with the aim of cordovan, which is a horse's hip leather, and the surface is very hard, so the chewy texture of the cordovan is difficult to taste, but it has increased the density of the tissue by penetrating tallow.
.
Ostrich leather
(Real ostrich, Africa)
Extra cost : USD 350.00
Finish - Matt type
Ostrich skin is a special skin that is used exclusively for the finest productions, along with crocodile skin in most brands. It is characterized by the appearance of feathery pores called Quill Marks. The grade of the ostrich hide is determined by how evenly and beautifully this Quill mark is. A price of each ostrich skin costs about the same as a crocodile skin. Of course, it is very large compared to the crocodile, but the quill mark is actually very narrow.
Apart from the price, there is also a great difficulty in workability. The tricky thing about ostrich leather is to adjust the thickness first. In general, in order to produce small items, the thickness of each part is adjusted in various ways to suit the needs-In the case of ostrich leather, this is a leather that requires considerable technical proficiency and experience because of the difference in thickness of quill mark .
However, the peculiar details and beautiful quillmark texture of the ostrich leather product completed through the process are well worth enduring all the trouble and annoyance.
.
Crocodile leather
